There is more to the chess game US-Koreas-China-Russia. US power has failed to force North Korea into compliance. The deal is pushing Obama’s pivot to Asia on the back burner. US military withdrawal from South Korea will fundamentally change the regional balance of power. Traditional US allies like Japan, Australia and Taiwan will be left in the cold and have few options other than strengthening ties with China.

Trump’s developer instinct seeing “great” commercial opportunities in North Korea may have prompted him to trade away much of the leverage the US had on Kim, but essentially aimed at China. The Trump Organization may develop business in North Korea, but it will be China which will take the lion’s share by pushing for North Korea to become part of its Belt and Road Initiative, connecting Asia with Europe and Africa.
