Sergey Utkin works as an associate professor of international politics at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense since the summer of 2022.
From 2016 to 2022 he headed the Strategic Assessment Section at the Primakov Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO), Russian Academy of Sciences. From 2016 until June 2018 he also headed the Foreign and Security Policy Department at the Moscow-based Centre for Strategic Research.
From 2012 to 2016 Utkin worked at the Centre for Situation Analysis at the Russian Academy of Sciences, now merged with IMEMO. Prior to that, from 2006 to 2013, he worked at IMEMO, where his last position was Head of Section for Political Aspects of European Integration.
Sergey Utkin holds a PhD in political science (international relations), which he received at IMEMO in 2006 for his thesis on the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU. In 2002, he graduated from the Moscow Pedagogical State University, School of History.
