The author argues that the EU must be able to act as an equal in a world of great powers. Given the wide division of opinion within Europe, with most EU member states having no ambition whatsoever to escape from the American yoke, unfortunately a unified EU foreign policy is a pipe dream.

The sad reality is that the EU is in no position to “push back against world powers when it must”. Still militarily occupied by the US, the Europe simply lacks the ability to make a fist.

As regards Russia, the author seems to be blind for Russia’s achievements under Putin: a self-sufficient, diversified nation that can compete with any industrial superpower. Is the author unaware that the alliance Beijing-Moskou has led to a serious shift in the global balance of power? Surely one must wonder who needs more to engage with the other: a strong, self confident Russia or a devided EU grown too fast for its strength.
